Many wedding photographers include an engagement session in some or all of their packages. Engagement sessions are a perfect way to get to know your photographer, get a sense for how they work, and to get comfortable working together I personally LOVE when my couples opt for an engagement session. Not only do you end up with beautiful photos for your Save the Dates and Invitations, but it gives you an opportunity to get some practice in front of a camera and it makes you feel so much more excited and prepared for photos on your wedding day!

Your engagement session is more than just a photo shoot—it’s a chance to celebrate your love story and create memories that reflect who you truly are as a couple. Here are 6 tips to make your session feel authentic and uniquely yours:

1. Choose a Meaningful Location

Think about places that hold special meaning for you as a couple. Is it the coffee shop where you had your first date, the park where you walk your dog, or a mountain trail you love to hike together? A meaningful location will add depth and personal connection to your photos.

2. Wear What Makes You Comfortable

Your outfits should reflect your personalities and make you feel confident. Whether that’s a flowy dress and button-up shirt or jeans and your favorite sneakers, the key is to feel like yourself. Avoid trends that don’t align with your style and instead focus on timeless pieces that feel authentic to you. You can even bring an outfit change to mix things up and show off different aspects of your style and personality!

3. Incorporate Activities You Love

Engagement sessions don’t have to be about standing still and posing. Think about activities you enjoy doing together—whether it’s making coffee, playing your favorite board game, or sitting around a campfire sipping on your favorite hard cider and making s'mores . Incorporating these elements will make your session more dynamic and true to your relationship, and will ultimately lead to photos that feel authentic!

4. Add Personal Touches

Adding small personal touches can make your session even more special. Bringing along your pet to include in your session (this is my favorite, please I beg you bring your pet to your session), or even a speaker with a playlist of songs you love to dance to together. Anything that will make your session feel more personal and meaningful to you will help to create a special and more memorable experience.

5. Trust Your Photographer

Choose a photographer whose style resonates with you and who makes you feel comfortable. Share your story and vision with them—the more they know about you, the better they can capture your unique connection. Let go of perfection and trust your photographer to guide you through the session while also making sure to communicate if certain posing or prompts aren't working for you!

6. Be Present and Have Fun

The most authentic moments come when you’re fully present with each other. Focus on your partner, laugh, and enjoy the experience. Don’t worry about the camera—your love will shine through naturally.

Your engagement session should feel like an extension of your relationship, filled with moments that genuinely represent your love.

By following these 6 tips, you'll make your engagement photos feel authentic, and uniquely you!
